ABOUT US
Strength. Love. Life. Everything.
These are just a few of the responses offered at the Women in the World Summit 2013 to describe what a mother means to her family. They reflect the essential role of mothers in families … and they underscore the devastating impact a mother's death can have on a family.
Sponsored by Newsweek and The Daily Beast, the Summit was a forum for entrepreneurs, CEOs, world leaders and celebrity influencers to discuss global issues: women's economic empowerment, women's rights and women's health, including the work being done by Merck for Mothers to reduce maternal mortality. Merck Vaccines President Dr. Julie Gerberding joined Christy Turlington Burns of Every Mother Counts, Senior Chief Kwataine Masina of the African nation of Malawi, Molly Melching of Tostan and Deborah Roberts of ABC News to raise awareness of maternal mortality as a worldwide, preventable problem.
Dr. Gerberding highlighted that most maternal deaths are preventable when she said, "It's tragic to not know what to do; it's more tragic to not do what we know."
