Programs and Partnerships

We actively promote equal opportunities for our employees. We are committed to a continuing program of affirmative action.

Our diversity and inclusion policy seeks to:

  • create a work environment that attracts the best people and provides them with the opportunity to develop and advance;
  • effectively use available human resources to meet our need for long-term growth and operating efficiency;
  • provide equal employment opportunities to all qualified applicants; and
  • ensure that we continue to comply with all applicable federal, state and local laws.

We have several recruiting and outreach initiatives to seek and attract a diverse candidate pool including:

  • UNCF-Merck Science Initiative: This 10-year, $20 million commitment to the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) provides scholarships and internships to outstanding African American students pursuing studies in biomedical research. Students intern in Merck laboratories with Merck scientists as mentors.
  • Alliance/Merck Ciencia Hispanic Scholars Program: Through this partnership with the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, we promote science education among Hispanic students to improve their ability to achieve access to higher education and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
  • Hire Heroes: We partner with Hire Heroes, U.S.A., a charitable organization that provides employment opportunities nationwide to disabled veterans.

Many of our leadership development and training materials reflect our commitment to diversity. Everyone at Merck, from senior executives to new employees, has the opportunity to participate in interactive programs that emphasize the value of diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

We provide support for a number of educational programs and nonprofit organizations promoting diversity and inclusion. These include:

We recognize the challenges that employees face trying to balance work and everyday life. That's why we offer employees a number of options to help them find a solution that works best for their situation.

Regular full - or part-time employees are eligible to apply for a flexible work arrangement - part-time work, job sharing, flextime, compressed work week, telecommuting or remote working, for example - in accordance with all applicable laws, rules and regulations. We work to ensure that flexibility is implemented consistently across our company, taking local considerations into account.
