Flex 2002 News:
No Coverage Flex Credits Eliminated
Currently, employees who elect no coverage for medical or
dental benefits receive “opt out” credits that can be used to pay for other
flex benefits. Starting in 2002, employees may continue to elect no coverage;
however, “opt out” credits will no longer be available.
As a result, the no coverage
options will be a way to avoid electing—and paying for—medical and dental
coverage, but they will not provide credits that can be used to pay for
other flex benefits. Please note that the elimination of the “opt out” credit
applies to all Merck employees.
Fast Facts
- The elimination of the medical and dental “opt out” credits applies to all Merck employees—including “Merck Couples” (that is, Merck employees who are married to each other).
- For employees who live outside the Managed Choice® POS service area (based on zip code) or in areas where POS service pilots are in progress (for example, Albany, Georgia), contributions for the 80/20 option will mirror those for the POS option. If your Flex 2002 Personal Summary Pages show the same contributions for the 80/20 and POS options, you are deemed to live outside the POS network—which means you’ll probably have to travel to access POS providers.
- For 2002, CIGNA HMO will not be open to new participants—because of an anticipated lapse in NCQA accreditation.
