Flex 2002 News:
Flex 2002 News: Employee Contributions Increasing for Medical
and Dental Coverage: What These Changes Mean to You
If you are covered under
the Merck Medical or Merck Dental Plans, keep in mind:
- For 2002, employee
contributions for most medical and dental coverage options will increase.
As a result, all medical options will require employee contributions—and
only the preventive dental option (for employee only coverage) will
be available at no cost.
- Starting in 2002,
employees may continue to elect No Coverage for medical and dental benefits;
however, “opt out” credits will no longer be available. This means that
the No Coverage option will be a way to avoid electing—and paying for—medical
and dental coverage, but they will not provide credits to pay for other
flex benefits. Please note that the elimination of the “opt out” credit
applies to all employees—including “Merck Couples” (that is, Merck employees
who are married to each other).
- The new employee
contributions for medical and dental coverage—together with all of the
coverage changes profiled in this newsletter—make this a good time for
you to review your current elections and choose the most appropriate
health care coverage for your needs and your budget.
