Health worker training initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa face numerous operational challenges, such as maintaining, adapting and continuously improving training activities to address high staff turnover; internal health worker migration from low-population density rural to high-population density urban areas; and unforeseen natural events such as disease outbreaks. For this reason, the Merck Vaccine Network–Africa (MVN-A) training centers are integrated into existing national health care infrastructures, operate in alignment with immunization priorities set by Ministries of Health and support strategic initiatives endorsed by regional and international stakeholders such as the World Health Organization and the GAVI Alliance.
MVN-A training centers are actively pursuing long-term sustainability plans to help maintain high levels of training, expand the scope of training activities, and support evolving national immunization priorities. Examples of activities include developing an innovative supportive supervision program to improve the dynamics and effectiveness of cascading training to lower-level health workers and expanding training to strengthen data management skills using advanced computer software.
