Major Science and Innovation Policy Activity and Stakeholder Engagement 2007-2008

In the past two years, Merck scientists have participated in developing public policy on numerous and varied issues related to the support of science and innovation. For example, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has engaged in the Medical School Objectives Project (MSOP) for more than 10 years. As part of the project, a Merck scientist was vice chair of a panel convened to develop a report on the education of medical school students in effective and safe prescribing.(Adobe Acrobat FilePDF* )

Merck also participates in the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Forum on Drug Discovery, Development and Translation, which provides a unique opportunity for stakeholders in health care to meet and discuss issues of mutual interest. It includes leaders from the pharmaceutical industry, academia and regulatory agencies, as well as foundations and patient advocates. The Forum explores approaches to increasing the number, quality and value of new drugs by making the drug development process faster, safer, more efficient and more focused on the needs of patients.

Merck also participated in the 2008 Partnering for Global Health Forum, which renewed developing world health needs and discussed new U.S. initiatives for neglected tropical disease drug development.
