Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes — Merck has been placed on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index, which is based on a thorough analysis of corporate economic, environmental, and social performance. The North American Index captures the leading 20 percent in terms of sustainability out of the largest 600 North American companies. (2009)
Corporate Responsibility Officer Magazine — Ranked Merck No. 4 on the 10th Annual 100 Best Corporate Citizens List. The tenth annual list rates companies on their performance in seven key areas: environment, climate change, human rights, philanthropy, employee relations, financial and governance. (2009)
The Chronicle of Philanthropy — Ranked Merck as the third largest donor in the United States in its 2008 annual charitable giving survey - based on its 2008 corporate giving. Since 2000, Merck has ranked consistently among the top corporate donors in the United States. (2009)
FTSE4Good Index — Merck is FTSE4Good constituent member. The FTSE4Good Index Series has been designed to measure the performance of companies that meet globally recognized corporate responsibility standards. (2008, 2009)
KLD Research and Analytics — Included Merck in the FTSE KLD US All Cap Sustainability Index (USSA), FTSE KLD 400 Social Index, FTSE KLD US Large Cap Sustainability Index, FTSE KLD US Large-Mid Cap Sustainability Index and FTSE KLD Select Social Index. Institutional Investor — Institutional Investor magazine named Merck's Chief Financial Officer Peter Kellogg to its 2009 ranking of the top CFOs in the United States. The magazine ranked the top chief financial officers based on nine categories of attributes and reputation. The results of the survey named Peter the top CFO in the "Major Pharmaceuticals" sector. Corporation of the Year for Supplier Diversity — In 2008, Merck was presented with the Corporation of the Year award by the Minority Supplier Development Council (MSDC) of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. The award is based on demonstrated corporate commitment to minority supplier development. (2008)
Research and Innovation
Research is the focus of everything we do. Merck's excellence in translating breakthrough research into the development of innovative medicines and vaccines has won the Company numerous awards.
Vaccine Industry Excellence (VIE) Award — ROTATEQ® (rotavirus vaccine, live, oral pentavalent), Merck's medicine approved to prevent rotavirus gastroenteritis in infants and children, received the Vaccine Industry Excellence Award for the Best Prophylactic Vaccine at the World Vaccine Conference in Washington, DC in April 2009. ROTATEQ was recognized for its unique design, safety and efficacy data from clinical trials, as well as data from its routine clinical use in the United States.
Pharmaceutical Research and Manufactures of America (PhRMA) — MRL scientists, Drs. Barry Buckland, vice president, Bioprocess Research and Development, and Eliav Barr, vice president, Clinical Research – Oncology, won the Discoverers Award from PhRMA for their pioneering work on GARDSASIL® [Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus (Types 6, 11, 16, 18) Recombinant Vaccine].
Prix Galien USA 2008 Award — ISENTRESS® (raltegravir), Merck's medicine for HIV, received the Award for Best Pharmaceutical Agent. The Prix Galien, often considered the industry's equivalent of the Nobel Prize, recognizes the pharmaceutical industry's outstanding achievement in the development of new medicines and is considered the highest accolade for pharmaceutical research and development. Prix Galien USA 2007 Award — GARDASIL® [Quadrivalent Human Papillomavirus (Types 6, 11, 16, 18) Recombinant Vaccine], Merck’s vaccine for the prevention of cervical cancer, shared the Award for Best Biotechnology Product. In addition, JANUVIA® (sitagliptin), a diabetes medicine from Merck, shared the 2007 Award for Best Pharmaceutical Agent. (2007)
National Marfan Foundation — Merck received the Hero with a Heart award for our donation of COZAAR® (losartan), which may provide hope for patients with Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the connective tissue of the body. The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the Pediatric Heart Network have launched a clinical trial to study losartan in people with Marfan syndrome. (2008)
The Lancet "Paper of the Year 2006" — This prize went to publications in the New England Journal of Medicine on clinical trial results of two rotavirus vaccines. The lead author on one of the papers was Dr. Timo Vesikari from the University of Tampere Medical School, Tampere, Finland, who reported on a trial involving Merck's ROTATEQ® (rotavirus vaccine, live, oral, pentavalent) vaccine. The Lancet panel selected the winning papers based on the potential global public health benefit of the rotavirus vaccines. (2007)
Hungarian Society of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology — EZETROL® (ezetimibe) (ZETIA in the United States) received the prestigious "Drug of the Year Award" for 2007. The award acknowledged EZETROL for its mechanism of action, filling a therapeutic gap, and improving the side effect and interaction profile compared to currently available treatment options. (2007)

Business Week — Merck named to the "World's Most Innovative Companies" list. The honor recognizes Merck for producing "first-in-class drugs" and, in particular, for the recent launches of GARDASIL and JANUVIA. (2007)

Access to Medicines Index (ATMI) — Ranked Merck No. 3 on its inaugural Indes, which assesses and ranks the world's 20 largest pharmaceutical companies based on various criteria around global access to medicines. (2008)
Helen Keller Humanitarian Award — Merck was recognized for the Company's responsible and compassionate leadership in fighting onchocerciasis (river blindness) through the MECTIZAN Donation Program. (2008)
Business Magazine — Awarded Merck Sharp & Dohme (MSD) Venezuela for its ongoing commitment to corporate responsibility – particularly for the MECITZAN Donation Program. Prix Galien USA 2007 Award — Former Merck CEO P. Roy Vagelos, M.D., was honored with the prestigious Pro Bono Humanum Award in recognition of his dedication to improved global health through the campaign to eliminate river blindness (onchocerciasis) through the MECTIZAN Donation Program. (2007)
Healthcare Institute of New Jersey — Honored Merck Chairman Richard T. Clark for his leadership and commitment in helping to make prescription medicine available to hundreds of thousands of needy New Jerseyans through Rx4NJ, a program that connects qualified, low-income people with discount prescription drugs. Pan African Health Congress — Presented Merck, the Government of Botswana and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with the Absa Healthcare Initiative Award in the category Public Private Partnership for the African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships (ACHAP). (2007)
Scrip Awards — Merck received the prestigious Corporate Social Responsibility Award for the MECTIZAN Donation Program. The Virginia Health Care Foundation — Bestowed upon Merck its You "Rx" ceptional Award for helping Virginians access needed medicines. Merck's Patient Assistance Program has filled more than 330,000 prescriptions worth $21 million for more than 33,000 eligible Virginians. (2006)
American Chamber of Commerce, Guatemala — Awarded Merck Sharp & Dohme Central America the Good Corporate Citizen Award in the Social Category for its efforts around the MECTIZAN Donation Program in Guatemala, which reaches 158 local communities. (2006)

International Council of Nurses — Merck was the inaugural recipient of the "Partners in Development Award", created by the International Council of Nurses to recognize foundations, corporations, nongovernmental organizations or other groups that have demonstrated outstanding leadership and investment in nursing and health care capacity building. Access To Health Care Information
Merck provides unbiased, independently reviewed health care information resources for health care professionals and the general public, many of which have received recognition.
National Federation of the Blind — Awarded its 2007 Non-Visual Accessibility (NVA) certification to Merck for its corporate web site www.merck.com. Merck was the first U.S. pharmaceutical company to earn NFB-NVA certification in 2005. (2007)
11th Annual Webby Awards — The Merck Manual Online Medical Library was selected as an Official Honoree for both the Health and the Pharmaceuticals categories of the 11th Annual Webby Awards. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) — Recognized Merck with the 2009 ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award for continued efforts to protect the environment. Merck, an ENERGY STAR partner since 2004, has been recognized by the EPA for four consecutive years – twice as Partner of the Year and twice for Sustained Excellence. (2009)
Green & Sustainable Energy Award — Merck received the Green & Sustainable Energy Award at the Hunterdon County (New Jersey) Planning Board Annual Planning and Design Awards in April 2009. The county recognized Merck for its 7.5-acre field of solar panels that produces 7-10 percent of the electricity at Merck's Whitehouse Station headquarters. (2009)
Agência Brasil de Segurança (ABS) Environment Award — Our manufacturing facility in Brazil received the ABS Environment Award in recognition of the comprehensive and ongoing initiatives in the conservation of natural resources and environmental protection. (2008)
City of Boulder, Colorado's Industrial Pretreatment Program – Merck was recognized with the Perfect Compliance Award from the City of Boulder, Colorado's Industrial Pretreatment Program during 2008. City of Wilson, North Carolina — Our manufacturing facility received a Pretreatment (Wastewater) Compliance Gold Award from the City of Wilson. This is the 10th consecutive year the site has won an award and the 7th consecutive year it has won the Gold Award. (2008)
Kanto Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry — Our manufacturing facility in Menuma, Japan, received the prestigious Excellent Energy Management Factory Award in recognition of significant energy savings. (2008)
The Saitama Eco Award — Merck's Menuma, Japan, manufacturing facility received this prestigious award in recognition of the facility's outstanding achievements in the field of energy conservation. The facility reduced its energy consumption by 26 percent from 2004 to 2006. (2007)
Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) — Merck's Ballydine site was presented with the SEI Best Energy Awareness Campaign Award, recognizing the site's efforts in making employees aware of and engaged in energy-saving activities. (2007)
Madrid Excelente — Our manufacturing site in Alcalá, Spain was awarded the seal of "Madrid Excelente," for consistently demonstrating the highest supply, quality, safety, customer service and environmental standards, and representing the best of Madrid and Spain. (2007)
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy — In 2008, Merck was awarded the ENERGY STAR sustained Excellence recognition stating that, "Merck is a leading example of a company with committed senior executives and an advanced energy strategy that creates a corporate-wide, results-oriented energy efficiency culture." Merck was also honored as an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year in 2006 and 2007.
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency — Presented Merck with the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award for the second consecutive year. We received the Greener Synthetic Pathways Award for discovering a highly innovative and efficient process chemistry to produce sitagliptin, which is the active ingredient in our diabetes medicine, JANUVIA®. The method of synthesis creates 220 pounds less waste for each pound of sitagliptin manufactured. Over the lifetime of producing JANUVIA, Merck expects to eliminate the formation of at least 330 million pounds of waste, including nearly 110 million pounds of aqueous waste. LEED Green Building Certification — Our Rosetta facility in Seattle received a Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for energy conservation and sustainability. (2007)
Virginia Manufacturers Association — Merck received the Silver Environmental Excellence Award for reducing phosphorous discharge into the Shenandoah River by 75 percent. The phosphorous waste from Stonewall is now used by the Hopewell Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility in Richmond to treat their wastewater. (2007)
City of Wilson, North Carolina — Our manufacturing facility received a Pretreatment (Wastewater) Compliance Gold Award from the City of Wilson. This is the 9th consecutive year the site has won an award and the 7th consecutive year it has won the Gold Award. (2007)
Wildlife Habitat Council — Recognized Merck with recertification for creating and improving on the habitat program at its Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, headquarters, situated on 1,011 acres of woodland and designed to limit disturbance to the surrounding environment. In 2007, we were recognized for increasing native biodiversity. (2006, 2007)
North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC) and the BOC Group — Awarded Merck Sharp & Dohme in Cramlington, United Kingdom, first prize in the inaugural BOC/NEPIC environment award for the site's Champions of the Environment project. The project involved Merck Sharp & Dohme's work to help clear the East Cramlington Local Nature Reserve of polluting water discharged from disused mines. (2005, 2007)
American Chemistry Council – Our facility in Rahway, New Jersey, was presented with the 2006 Responsible Care Energy Efficiency Award from our Microturbine Project, which has resulted in energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions. (2006)
IChemE AstraZeneca Award for Excellence in Green Chemistry and Engineering — Awarded for the development, design and use of new processes that are robust and viable while minimizing or eliminating generation of pollution at source and risk to health and the environment, Merck was recognized by IChemE with the AstraZeneca Award for the process chemistry for JANUVIA in 2005 and with a 2nd place award in 2006.
Costa Rica Chamber of Exporters (CADEXCO) — Merck Sharp & Dohme Central America received the Environmental Merit Award from CADEXCO for the subsidiary's local Champions for the Environment project to increase awareness about the proper care of natural resources and the importance of recycling. Fostering the Health And Safety Of Our Employees
North Carolina Department of Labor — Merck Global Engineering Services and partner Yonkers Industries Construction Management Team received the Volunteer Protection Building Star Award from the North Carolina Department of Labor. The award was presented for the team's commitment and dedication in creating a safe and healthy work environment at the first expansion of the Durham, North Carolina site. (2009)
City of Wilson, North Carolina — Our manufacturing facility in Wilson, North Carolina received a Gold and Silver award from the North Carolina Department of Labor for having a lost-time injury record that is at least 50 percent below the statewide rate for the pharmaceutical industry.
City of Durham, North Carolina — Merck's manufacturing facility in Durham, North Carolina received the Gold Safety Award from the North Carolina Department of Labor for having a lost-time injury record that is at least 50 percent below the statewide rate for the pharmaceutical industry.
U.S. Green Building Council — Merck's manufacturing facility in Durham, North Carolina earned the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver rating, representing the first Merck building designed to meet LEED certification standards.
Agência Brasil de Segurança (ABS) Occupational and Safety and Health Award — Awarded our manufacturing facility in Brazil the ABS Occupational and Safety and Health Award. (2008)
Spanish Safety Association of the Chemical Industry – Awarded our manufacturing facility in Alcala, Spain with award in recognition of having one of the best safety programs of the pharmaceutical companies in Spain.
Sindusfarma – Awarded Merck with an Occupational Health and Safety Management Excellence.
New Jersey Governor's Occupational Safety and Health Awards Program — Recognized Merck for outstanding performance in 2008.
Construction Users Roundtable (CURT) — Merck won two Construction Industry Safety Excellence (CISE) Constructor Awards for its vaccine bulk manufacturing at our West Point, Pennsylvania, facility, and also its production support in pharmaceutical cold chain product (vaccines) in Haarlem, Netherlands.
Spanish Autonomic Commission on Occupational Safety and Hygiene in the Chemical Industry (COASHIQ) — Awarded MSD Spain our second COASHIQ Occupational Safety Award. (2008)
OSHA Voluntary Protection Program 2007 — Our R&D facility in Wayne, Pennsylvania, was the first Merck facility to be awarded the U.S. Department of Labor’s OSHA Voluntary Protection Program Star Certification. This award is only presented to sites with injury rates well below industry average for similar operations, safety programs that exceed regulatory requirements, demonstrated safety leadership and significant employee engagement. The Government of Mexico — Presented Merck's manufacturing operations in Mexico its prestigious Safe Industry Certification for the second consecutive time. Of the 2,000 companies that voluntarily participate in the Mexican government program, only 18 have achieved certification — and MSD Mexico is the only pharmaceutical company to receive certification. National Irish Safety Organisation (NISO) — NISO recognized our manufacturing facility in Ireland for our consistent safety achievements. The NISO awards are supported by the Irish Insurance Federation and the Construction Industry Federation. Our Irish facility has won 11 major safety awards since 1993, including two Supreme and five Gold awards, reflecting its well-established commitment to safety. (2006, 2007)
Construction Users Roundtable (CURT) — Merck received two Construction Users Round Table (CURT) Construction Industry Safety Excellence Awards, making Merck the only company to receive more than one award in 2007. The CURT Awards recognize safety management programs deemed exemplary. We received a CURT Safety Award for construction work at Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, following zero recordable incidents and zero injuries in more than 1 million hours worked. CURT also recognized our safety performance during the construction of the GARDASIL vaccine manufacturing facility in Elkton, Virginia. The project, which took more than 12 months, demonstrated more than 130,000 man hours worked with only one recordable incident. The foundation for the project's excellent safety performance was based on prioritizing safety, rigorous safety planning, detailed procedures, extensive safety training, close monitoring of safety performance, and prompt corrective action where necessary. Construction Industry Safety Excellence (CISE) Program — Merck received two CISE awards for excellent safety performance on a construction project. Merck project team members worked directly with contractors and routinely prioritized safety ahead of other project priorities. CISE Awards are presented by CURT (Construction Users Roundtable) to recognize commendable safety management by member companies that have most effectively implemented the recommendations of CURT, the CURT Construction Owners’ Safety Blueprint, and other CURT user practices. North Carolina Department of Labor — Our Wilson facility received the Million Hour Safety Award for achieving a million hours without a lost time. (2006)
National Safety Council — For the second consecutive year, our manufacturing facility in Wilson, North Carolina, received the Green Cross for Safety Excellence Achievement Award for achieving a Lost Workday Case rate 50 percent below the national industry average. (2006)
Puerto Rico Manufacturers Association — Our manufacturing facility in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, received the President’s Safety Award for achieving a Recordable Injury Rate (RIR) lower than 50 percent of the National Average Index. Our facilities in Caguas and Manati received the Distinguished Safety Performance Award for achieving a RIR lower than 10 percent of the national average index. (2006)
Spanish National Association for Safety & Hygiene in the Chemicals Industry — Our manufacturing facility in Alcala, Spain, received an award for the fewest work-related incidents in the pharmaceutical sector. (2006)
Brazilian Security Agency (Agencia Brasil Seguranca) — Merck received a 2006 Safety and Health Award in recognition of a significant reduction in accidents at its manufacturing facility in Campinas, Brazil, over a three-year period. (2006)
