Supporting Employee Giving
Employees in Rahway, NJ participate in Merck's spring 2005 blood drive.

Employees in Rahway, NJ participate in Merck's blood drive.

Merck offers a number of programs that allow employees to contribute - financially or otherwise - to the communities in which we work and live. Merck's employee giving programs include the Merck Partnership for Giving (P4G), the P4G "Touched By an Agency" grants, MerckVolunteers and the Merck Blood Drive program.

Partnership for Giving (P4G)

The Merck Partnership for Giving (P4G) is our year-round matching funds program that gives active U.S. and Puerto Rico-based employees and retirees the opportunity to support the health and human services agencies, accredited educational institutions, and arts and culture organizations of their choice. These contributions are matched by The Merck Company Foundation. In 2007, nearly $23 million (donor contributions and Merck matching funds) was raised to support qualifying organizations in our communities.

P4G: Contributing to Global Health

In November 2004, Merck's Partnership for Giving (P4G) added The Friends of the Global Fight (FGF), a qualified 501(c)(3) health and human services organization, to its list of approved organizations, giving employees a new option to contribute toward the global fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. FGF encourages public leadership to support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. FGF is just one of the many U.S.-based organizations to which Merck employees may contribute through the P4G program.

Touched By an Agency

While Merck employees contribute to their communities in many ways, we also benefit from the services that local health and human services organizations provide. To recognize and thank the many people and organizations that have made a difference in our own lives and the lives of our families, U.S.-based employees are invited each year to nominate non-profit agencies to receive a $1,000 "Thank You Grant" through the Merck Partnership for Giving (P4G) program. Employee's personal experiences with these agencies are shared through The Daily, Merck's internal newsletter. We also post these stories on the P4G web site. In 2007, 15 agencies received Thank You grants.

MerckVolunteers

In 2006, Merck launched MerckVolunteers, a resource that helps U.S. Merck employees identify volunteer opportunities in their communities and connects them to organizations that need their help. Merck is partnering with VolunteerMatch, a non-profit web service, to provide employees with a customized, easy-to-use resource that can help them search for meaningful volunteer opportunities by area of interest, location or organization. MerckVolunteers also has a Dollars for Doers component that enables volunteers to apply for matching grants from The Merck Company Foundation for hours they have volunteered at eligible organizations.

Blood Drives

Merck runs blood drives at its New Jersey and Pennsylvania sites. In New Jersey, blood drives are run every quarter with the help of our partner, New Jersey Blood Services. In 2005, Merck's New Jersey sites collected 1,980 units of blood. In 2007, Merck's New Jersey sites collected a total of 1,920 units of blood.  In addition to hosting Merck's quarterly blood drives, the Rahway site also hosts bus-based mobile platelet drives that result in approximately 26 platelet donations annually.

"Once you're touched by it, it becomes routine for you to give [blood]. An hour of your time can really help people. At the very least, it will put a smile on someone's face and make them feel better. I don't think of donating as an option."
