Merck has dedicated hundreds of millions of dollars and many of our best scientists over the years to HIV/AIDS research. In 1988, Merck researchers were the first to demonstrate that the inhibition of the protease enzyme would prevent replication of HIV. The following year, Merck scientists published the first crystal structure for HIV protease. These insights led to the development of a new, powerful class of medicines to treat HIV/AIDS: protease inhibitors. Today, we continue to work to find new ways to treat and prevent HIV/AIDS.
