Fleet Safety Performance

In accordance with Merck's dedication to help protect the safety of its employees and the public, we have established a worldwide Fleet Safety program.

Historically, motor vehicle accidents are one of the leading causes of occupational lost time in the pharmaceutical industry and significantly contribute to Merck's lost-time injury incidence rate. In 2006, Merck fleet vehicles were driven 482 million miles and were involved in 4,780 accidents. This translates into a rate of 9.9 accidents per million miles (APMM). Fleet accident trends for the period 2004 to 2006 are noted below:

Fleet Accident Trends, 2004-2006

Between the period 2004 and 2006, Merck experienced a 13% reduction in APMM.

We continue to emphasize employee safe-driving behavior. Merck fleet administrators select automobiles equipped with driver and passenger side air bags and anti-lock braking systems, where available. In the U.S., Merck employee-driving performance now is being assessed via computerized motor vehicle record checks. Driver training both in the classroom and behind the wheel also is being provided for newly hired sales representatives.
