Opportunities for Professional Growth

Consistent with our desire to maintain a creative environment that will stimulate individuals to achieve their potential, we take pride in the programs and resources that we offer our employees to help them achieve professional growth, career development and advancement. Employees can take advantage of a wide array of educational and learning opportunities offered in-house or outside of the Company.

Following are some examples of our professional development programs and resources:

Leadership Development Program

Several years ago, Merck established a Leadership Development Strategy that focused on developing the leadership skills of Merck employees at all levels. The strategy has been successfully implemented through a comprehensive set of training programs and Web-based resources that offer employees the opportunity to strengthen existing skills and develop new ones. Additionally, our core leadership assessment programs utilize multiple-source feedback surveys to enable employees to identify specific areas where development is needed and create a plan that will help achieve their goals.

Merck's Development Resource Center

Merck encourages our employees to build their skills through external programs and resources as well. This center - available both online and on-site at major U.S. sites - offers more than 2,500 CD-ROM courses, video and audiocassette programs, and hundreds of books and periodicals on leadership, general management and personal development subjects.

Merck's Mentoring Program

In addition to classroom training, our employees can benefit from learning from a personal mentor. The unique aspect of this program is that it is employee-driven, which enables employees to define their objectives for the program and to be matched with a mentor who will best support their mentoring goals. The program also helps newly hired employees who need to learn how to navigate Merck's processes and culture by pairing the newcomers with Merck veterans.

Flexible Work Arrangements

Merck recognizes that what our employees accomplish is more important than when or where the work is done. Therefore, Merck has instituted flexible work arrangements such as flex-time, job-sharing, part-time, telecommuting, remote work, compressed workweeks or any combination that meets both business and personal needs.
