Introduction

Peripheral arterial problems increase in frequency with age. Atherosclerosis is the most common cause among the elderly. Cigarette smoking and diabetes are the most common exacerbating factors.

Because function of the peripheral circulation can be directly scrutinized, a thorough physical examination is the key to evaluation and treatment. Laboratory tests help confirm the diagnosis and quantify the extent of disease.
