Changes in Peripheral Nerves

Nerve conduction time slows with age, although generally a change in function is not perceptible. In any injury to the peripheral nerves, reparative growth of the axons occurs if the cell body is intact; this reinnervation continues throughout life but is not as effective in elderly persons as in younger persons.
