Care of surgical patients often involves nonsurgical consultants (eg, primary care physicians, specialists), who may be asked to provide preoperative risk assessment (sometimes requested as medical clearance), suggest ways to minimize perioperative risks (eg, deep venous thrombosis, endocarditis), and manage complex medical conditions.
