Withholding of Food and Fluid

All U.S. courts that have considered the issue have held that the artificial administration of food and fluid is a medical treatment subject to the same strictures that guide other medical decisions. However, some states differentiate this intervention from others. Certain religions also regard artificial administration of food and fluid differently from other medical interventions and have special rules governing whether the surrogate can refuse its initiation or continuation.
