Introduction

The patient's overall health and level of functioning help determine diagnostic approach and therapeutic goals. A clinician must consider both the quality and the quantity of remaining years, along with risks from significant comorbid disorders, while weighing the potential benefits of tests against their risk. Some tests pose risks directly; others do so because they lead to further tests and treatments.
