Introduction

Bowel function varies tremendously, not only from one person to another but also for any one person at different times. The large intestine (which comprises the colon and the rectum) is taken for granted when things are running smoothly. But when things go awry—for example, when stool passes too slowly or too quickly— the large intestine becomes the focus of attention.
