At Merck, we’ve always worked hard to reduce our environmental impact and conserve key resources. Not only because doing so is consistent with our values as a good corporate citizen, but also because it makes good business sense. By operating in a sustainable manner, being careful about energy, water and raw material consumption, and minimizing our environmental impact, we are able to operate more efficiently – as well as more responsibly.
That’s why, as a U.S. EPA Climate Leader, Merck is fully committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It’s also why we’ve installed two major solar energy systems at our offices in New Jersey, each among the largest of their kind in a corporate setting.
These state-of-the-art systems are helping to generate about 7.5 percent of the power needs at Merck's corporate headquarters in Whitehouse Station, NJ, and another 12 percent at our facilities in Summit, NJ. Together, the power generated from these solar energy systems will allow us to avoid more than 2,500 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually - about the same as taking 400 cars off the road each year.
"Supporting the use of clean, reliable solar power is consistent with our business mission. We expect to realize significant energy savings by reducing the amount of electricity we need to purchase."
At the same time, we are also using wind power to power our facilities in the Netherlands and elsewhere to help reduce energy costs and improve our environmental footprint.
Using solar and wind energy is just one part of our continuing commitment to the environment. In addition, we are:
