FOOD FOR THOUGHT: EATING WELL ON A BUDGET

Millions of families across America face the same meal-time dilemma: finding ways to eat healthy when money is tight.

Food For Thought: Eating Well on a Budget, the program introduced one year ago by Sesame Workshop, The Merck Company Foundation and UnitedHealthcare, was designed to help support families who have children, between the ages of two and eight, cope with uncertain or limited access to affordable and nutritious food. According to a recent study by The Field Research Corporation, this bilingual, multimedia initiative has been successful in a number of ways. After four weeks of exposure to materials in the kit provided to them, participants reported:

Positive impact on knowledge, behaviors and attitudes regarding how to cope with food insecurity and maintain healthy eating habits.

  • More than 80 percent reported that their child learned something from the DVD, and more than 90 percent said the same about the storybook.

Nearly three in four families reported that they are now:

  • Serving healthier meals including more fruits and vegetables;
  • Sticking to a menu planned in advance; and
  • Involving children in shopping or meal preparation.

The Food for Thought program consists of a number of educational materials, including the following resources, which provide a captivating way to teach children about healthy eating habits.

These tools are just a few of the many available through the program. Learn more by clicking the images below or by visiting the Sesame Street website.
