Merck employees walk to help raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care.

To help raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research, the Alzheimer's Association sponsors Walks to End Alzheimer’s® across the U.S. Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, this inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions.

Every year, Merck employees join the call to action and organize groups of walkers up and down the east coast, known as the Merck Marcher Teams. This year, Merck sponsored Alzheimer’s Association Walks to End Alzheimer’s in Boston and Philadelphia and also the Alzheimer’s NJ Walk to Fight Alzheimer's in Princeton, NJ. Many more Merck employees walk as individuals or families in other cities.

For the past 12 years, Lisa Zukauskas, associate vice president, Animal Health – Global Supplier Management, has sponsored a team at the Point Pleasant, N.J. walk, in honor of her grandfather, aunt and godmother. Lisa is committed to become even more deeply involved in advocacy and fundraising. She says “I would love to engage with others who have been impacted by this terrible disease and are trying to raise awareness and support.”

Across these teams, Merck has raised tens of thousands of dollars for Alzheimer’s research, independently of any corporate sponsorships. Lisa Gold, executive director of Scientific Affairs for Neurosciences at Merck has been participating in the walks since joining Merck in 2007. In 2012, she took on more of an organizational role for the walks within the company. “I enjoy being able to bring together people from across the organization who have a passion for making a difference through these walks,” she says. She notes that it’s a powerful day for herself and her co-marchers. “It’s a big day. I always love seeing how the community and families who have been touched by this devastating disease come together to support each other and to raise awareness and funds to support the local Alzheimer’s association chapters.”

Around the world, our employees take an active role in giving back to their communities through a variety of programs offered by the company and outside of it. Because Merck is proud of our employees’ dedication to serving others, the company offers a matching donation program [for employees in the U.S. and Puerto Rico] — meaning all funds donated or contributed by Merck employees for the Walk to End Alzheimer's will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, by the Merck Foundation.
