LIVING WITH DIABETES

Randy Jackson is using his personal experience with type 2 diabetes to help others with the disease understand its potentially serious complications, including heart disease.

The Taking Diabetes to Heart program aims to “set the stage” for people with type 2 diabetes to commit to a diabetes-friendly lifestyle.

You may know Jackson from American Idol or as a 20-year music industry veteran and a GRAMMY® Award-winning producer.  What you may not know is that he is one of the nearly 26 million Americans living with diabetes.

Jackson is touring the country with Merck on the Taking Diabetes to Heart program to help empower adults with type 2 diabetes to take their diabetes to heart by working with their health care team to manage their blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol to help lower their risk for heart disease.

When he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes nine years ago, Jackson was shocked. He was faced with doctor's orders to manage his blood sugar, overhaul his diet, and get moving.  Even though his father had type 2 diabetes, it was a tough diagnosis to take. He learned that having type 2 diabetes increased his risk for heart disease among other complications, and this was the push he needed to take his diabetes to heart.
