May is for

To the world, you might be just one person, but to one person, you might be the world.

Merck recognizes the importance of mothers every day, but in May, we ask that you join us in honoring the incredible role mothers play in our families and communities. In 2011, we created Merck for Mothers, a 10-year, $500 million initiative focused on improving the health and well-being of mothers during pregnancy and childbirth. We are using our business and scientific expertise to end preventable maternal mortality.

Since 1990, maternal mortality has nearly been cut in half. But that is not enough. Merck for Mothers, along with our 75 partners, is committed to creating a world where no woman dies giving life. In the past five years, we’ve made significant strides in 30 countries and helped provide more than 5 million women with better access to quality maternal healthcare.

We are proud of the many employees who provide their business and scientific expertise to amplify our impact. They have joined the fight to end maternal mortality by committing their time and resources to help in areas where maternal mortality rates are among the worst in the world by organizing events such as assembling post-natal kits to provide much-needed items to new mothers in Uganda, and hosting cell phone collection drives to provide mobile health technology in Nepal.

For 30 years, Working Mother magazine has compiled its Working Mother 100 Best Companies list, based on employees’ ratings of their companies’ family-friendly programs and company culture. Because of the tools, programs and resources offered to Merck employees, we are proud to have made that list 29 times.

Our work-life programs and resources help employees manage their well-being and productivity in both their professional and personal lives. Daisy Richardson, director, Analytical Method Development of Biologics, shares that her career with Merck has allowed her to thrive in two of her most important roles: as a mother of two and a scientist.

My two girls are my biggest sources of motivation to come to work every day. It’s really important for me to kids that women can be leaders in science, and they can be technically strong, and they can succeed. I think Merck really supports women in science.

We at Merck are committed to discovering better ways to make a difference in everything we do, from the health and happiness of our employees to how to bring better healthcare and innovative health solutions to millions of people across the developing and developed world. This May, we honor mothers and the people who endeavor to make motherhood a safe, healthy, and joyful experience everywhere.
