HEALTHY LIVING

Making informed choices about the food you eat is an important part of a healthy eating style.

While most people know it’s important to eat a healthy diet, it isn't always easy to sort through all of the information available about nutrition and food choices. Luckily, there are guidelines available to help you choose a balanced diet and follow a healthy eating plan.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, emphasize three major goals for Americans:

  • Balance calories with physical activity to manage weight
  • Consume more of certain foods and nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and seafood
  • Consume fewer foods with sodium (salt), saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars, and refined grains

Eating well to maintain a healthy weight has many health benefits. Being overweight or obese puts you at increased risk for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. However, the good news is that losing even a small amount of weight could dramatically reduce this risk. As always, be sure to talk to your health care professional before making any changes to your diet.
