Are you at risk?

Many people infected with chronic hepatitis C do not know that they have the virus. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 60 to 80 percent of people infected with chronic hepatitis C virus do not have symptoms. As a result, people who are undiagnosed may unknowingly spread the virus to others. 

Chronic hepatitis C is transmitted through exposure to infected blood. Exposure can occur from:

  • Contaminated blood transfusions, blood products, and organ transplants
  • Injections given with contaminated syringes
  • Needle-stick injuries
  • Injection drug use
  • Being born to a mother who has hepatitis C
  • Sex with an infected person
  • Sharing of personal items contaminated with infectious blood
